Doheny
Mature Chinese elms and bay laurel hold the perimeter of this Beverly Hills garden, honoring the English lineage of the house. A stone path moves through boxwood globes, where camellias soften the leaded-glass windows and a rhythm of king palms pushes against that clipped English heritage with something looser, more Californian. Crimson Japanese maples mark the threshold into another room, a crisp white pergola heavy with climbing vine, and adorned with vintage lanterns cast in iron and glass. Poolside, a native meadow grass takes over, and a sculptural composition of cloudlike boxwoods emerges. Structural in its bones, the garden lives relaxed.
